The Farm

The Demeter House School Farm is a site on the outskirts of Caistor, where the upper school students visit for Animal Care and Forest School. The Farm itself consists of a grid of horse paddocks lined with dirt lanes, but it’s true beauty is found hidden behind an archway in the trees. Through this concealed entrance is a peaceful clearing with the pastures of various animals around it’s edge and a fishing pond at it’s centre.

On weekdays you can hear the trundling of the school bus as it trudges up the lane before rolling to a halt beside two curious Shetland ponies. Then, as if a team of (soon-to-be) expert handlers, the students step from the bus and into the routine of caring for the animals. When I accompanied a trip to the farm, I was able to watch as, with only the verbal directions of the teacher, the students were each able to complete their tasks about the farm – be it turning off the electrical fences, giving the animals their feed or helping the teacher to clean out the results of said feed.

Goats

Alongside the two ponies, t
he students also help to care for three young goats, affectionately named Mel, Michelle and Linda, a coop-full of chickens and two sultan hens, and a horse in one of the farm’s paddocks.

Once done with their respective chores, the students usually spend some time pole fishing with sweetcorn while waiting for the others – a relaxed pass time aside from the occasional mischievous duck.

The Lake

Away from the sometimes hustle and bustle of school life, The Farm provides students with a calm respite while managing to impart both practical knowledge and skills, as well as teaching them the responsibilities of caring for animals. The Farm has already come a long way since the first time I visited it, nearly a year before this post, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it as we progress into Spring and Summer.

We Will Remember Them…

We were extremely proud of our students this morning for their participation in the Brigg Remembrance Ceremony. Riley, Bobby and Julius gave readings and planted crosses to represent Demeter House School as part of the ceremony. A number of other students came along to observe and were extremely well behaved throughout. This is the first year that we have been invited to participate in the ceremony itself and a few people commented to us that they hope to see us again next year as we had done very well!

Champion Chapman!

A massive well done to one of our pupils Dennis Chapman, for his achievements at the Mencap national championships in Doncaster. Two gold medals in shot put and discus, plus a silver in javelin and also breaking the current shot put record along the way.

Congratulations Dennis we are so very proud of your achievements!

Walk to The Gambia Completed!

We have completed our 3500 mile challenge! Since April 20th, the school has been collectively walking, running, swimming, cycling etc. to cover the distance between Demeter House and Tallinding Lower Basic School in The Gambia. We are proud to announce that we have completed the challenge and even went a bit further! Thank you to all those that have sponsored us or donated. You can still donate to our Go Fund Me page at https://www.gofundme.com/DemetertoTheGambia and we will announce the total raised at the end of term assembly.

Telephones

If you telephone the school, please leave a message, even if it is just your name and telephone number, as we can pick up messages even when we are not in school but we cannot see telephone numbers. We have had 36 missed calls this morning but not one message left! We will try and call you back as soon as possible or you can email us on admin@demeterhouseschool.com.

Thanks!

SCHOOL CLOSED – Thursday 1st March

The school is closed again today (both sites) due to the weather conditions. Many of the roads to and around Brigg are closed and driving conditions are dangerous. We will post updates later as to whether we expect to be open tomorrow but at this stage it is looking unlikely because of the health and safety risks.

SCHOOL CLOSED

SCHOOL IS CLOSED.
Good morning everyone! We have made the decision to close the school today due to the weather. Here in Brigg there are now a few inches of snow and it is forecast to continue all day with temperatures of -5. We do not feel it is safe for the students to be travelling today. Work will be uploaded to the website this morning.
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️☃️☃️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

School is Open

School is open as normal today. However, the snow is forecast to continue throughout the day so we may review the situation at lunchtime. As many of our students travel considerable distances or live in remote areas, please use your judgement as to whether you feel the weather is likely to cause them a problem getting here or home when deciding whether to send them in today. We will post further updates throughout the day.
